THERAPY FOR THERAPISTS
I find that clinical therapists, regardless of the discipline, benefit from doing their own, deep processing work around childhood trauma, parent-child dynamics, family functioning and more. This work can be instrumental in avoiding destructive countertransference interactions with clients, or, in other words, responding and reacting to your client's psychotherapy material based on your own history and not theirs. This work is different from consultation or supervision and in no way substitutes for either. This therapy work should be considered self care, integral to your effectiveness as a practitioner.
Are you a therapist, who needs a therapist?
an overwhelming number of behavioral health clinicians have been exposed to trauma and have or should engage in individual therapy. clinician self care is essential for us to be able to adequately provide services to our clients. THese are also reasonable business expenses as at therapist.

University teaching
I began teaching Social Work courses in 1999 at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York in their Human Services program. Since then, I have taught part time (including adjunct courses) in the following programs: University of Maryland Graduate School of Social Work in Baltimore, University of Maryland in Baltimore County, University of Kentucky, University of Washington Seattle and Tacoma campuses. Course work has been practice-based. Most recently, I co-designed and pioneered the University of Washington, School of Social Work's first, fully online course (pre-Pandemic), on the assessment of mental disorders. I remain an instructor in this school.
I have advised numerous students in independent studies and have supervised social workers earning independent clinical licenses.
